Background
On January 1, 1938 constituted as the 2nd Bombardment Squadron then edesignated as the 2nd Bombardment Squadron (Medium). On February 1, 1940 activated as part of the 22nd Bombardment Group (22nd BG) at Bolling Field in Washington D.C. equipped with the B-18 Bolo. On November 14, 1940 moves to Langley Field in Virginia. On December 9, 1941 moves to Muroc Field in California. On January 29, 1942 departs overseas for Australia.

Wartime History
On February 25, 1942 arrives Brisbane. On March 2, 1942 moves to Ipswich.

On April 7, 1942 moves to Garbutt Field in Townsville. On April 9, 1942 moves to Reid River Airfield.

On May 10, 1942 lost is B-26 Marauder 40-1402 pilot Captain Richard “Roy” R. Royall, Jr. (MIA).

B-26 "Bunagoon" 40-1403  pilot Krell crashed September 13, 1942

On September 26, 1942 lost is B-26 40-1392  pilot 2nd Lt. Earl C. Foster (survived) accidentally retracted the landing gear before becoming airborne at Reid River Airfield skidded on the belly and was written off.

B-26 "Thunder Bird" 40-1480  pilot Patteson crashed March 9, 1943

On October 9, 1943 moves to Dobodura Airfield in New Guinea.

On October 20, 1943 lost is B-25D 41-30573 pilot Captain Jason L. Brown (KIA) on a training mission suffered an aerial collision and crashed north of Dobudura.

On December 19, 1943 moves Nadzab Airfield in New Guinea.

On February 3, 1944 redesignated as the 2nd Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) equipped with B-24 Liberator heavy bombers.

On June 9, 1944 the 2nd BS took off from Hollandia Airfield on a flight to Wakde Airfield then onward to bomb Peleliu Airifeld. During take off B-24J Liberator 42-100195 pilot 1st Lt. John J. Durkin (survived) crashed on take off. Returning crashed is B-24J Liberator 42-110052 pilot Col. Richard W. Robinson (survived) and was written off.

On August 11, 1944 moves to Owi Airfield.

On November 19, 1944 moves to Leyte in the Philippines and operates from Tacloban Airfield and Bayug Airfield.

On November 28, 1944 moves to Angaur Airfield.

On January 20, 1945 moves to Clark Field on Luzon.

On April 18, 1945 the 2nd Bomb Squadron B-24s bomb Toyohara with a secondary target Tainan on Formosa (Taiwan). During the bomb run, targeted by anti-aircraft fire and five B-24s sustain light damage. Returning B-24J "Pleasure Bent" 42-100157 pilot 2nd Lt. Robert K. Farst makes an emergency landing with two engines out at Laoag Airfield.

On June 5, 1945 lost is B-24J 44-41126 pilot 2nd Lt. Dewey G. Allmon (KIA) crashed on Fuga Island.

On June 25, 1945 the squadron flies a bombing mission against Mandai Airfield on Celebes Island. Lost is B-24M 44-42431 pilot 2nd Lt. Lawrence R. Berry ditched (7 MIA, 4 POW). Returning, lost is B-24M 44-42240 pilot 1st Lt. Robert F. Faires (survived) landed with two flat tires at Pitu Airfield.

On August 18, 1945 moves to Okinawa until the end of the Pacific War.

Postwar
On November 23, 1945 moves to Okinawa. On April 30, 1946 redesignated as 2nd Bombardment Squadron (Very Heavy). On On September 18, 1947 becomes part of the U.S. Air Force (USAF). On July 28, 1948 redesignated 2nd Bombardment Squadron (Medium). On June 16, 1952 becomes part of the 22nd Bombardment Wing (2nd BW).
