Location Hailar Airfield was located to the northwest of Hailar. In Russian spelled "Haylar". Also spelled "Hailaerh". Construction During the 1930s, the Japanese built two airfields in the Hailar area. Hailar North Airfield, No. 1 (Hailar North) was a single runway to the northwest of Hailar. Hailar South Airfield, No. 2 (Hailar South) was a single runway to the south of Hailar. Wartime History As early as May 13, 1939 Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) aircraft arrived at Haylar to support ground forces during the Battle of Khalkhin Gol / Nomonhan Incident. During the battle, Hailar Airfield became the headquarters of the 2nd Air Division. On May 24, 1939 Type 97 Fighter / Ki-27 Nates from the 11th Hiko Sentai (11th Flying Regiment) arrived at Hailar and two days later began flying combat missions. On May 31, 1939, staff from the 2nd Hiko Shindan (2nd Air Division) relocated to Haylar to command the air units during the May 1939–August 1939 battle. On June 27, 1939 bombers from Haylar took off on "Operational Order A-1" to bomb Tamsagbulak Airfield and Bain-Tumen Airfield inside Mongolia. Units Based at Haylar References Contribute
