IJN 452 Kōkūtai |
Aircraft History Built by Nakajima. Painted with dark green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 2 Float Plane Fighter / A6M2-N Rufe Manufacture Number 7134. Wartime History Assigned to 452 Kōkūtai (452 Air Group). Tail Code unknown, likely M-?? (last two digits unknown). On February 21, 1943 at Yokosuka loaded aboard Kimikawa Maru and transported with convoy I-21 via Paramushuiro to Kiska. On March 10, 1943 unloaded at Kiska Harbor. This Rufe operated from Kiska Harbor Seaplane Base on Kiska and Holtz Bay on Attu until disabled or damaged. Wreckage This Rufe was abandoned upside down on the southern end of Holtz Bay on Attu Island upside down with the center float missing. On May 11, 1943 captured by the U.S. Army "Northern Force" that landed at Holtz Bay. American intelligence noted the manufacture number 7134 and photographed. Pieces were removed by Americans as souvenirs. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappared.
