Aircraft History
Built by Douglas Aircraft Company. Constructors Number 9817. On July 5, 1943 delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-47A-35-DL Skytrain serial number 42-23955. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia.

Wartime History
On August 23, 1943 assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 317th Troop Carrier Group (317th TCG), 39th Troop Carrier Squadron (39th TCS) as a replacement. Buzz Number / Nose Number 16. Nicknamed "The Lonesome Angel" with the nose art of a female nude with both her hands held upward on her shoulders with a pair of white wings and a yellow halo above her head. Call sign VH-CHI. During 1943, operated from 5 Mile (Ward) near Port Moresby.

On December 12, 1943 at 10:15am landed at Gusap Airfield (Gusap No. 3). Shortly afterwards at 10:50am a Japanese air raid commencated by Ki-48 Lilys escorted by Ki-43 Oscars but this plane survived without damage.

On August 3, 1944 this aircraft was condemned. Ultimate fate unknown likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
