Location Inner Mongolia (Nei Mongol) located in Manchuria in northern China. Between 1931–1945 part of the Empire of Manchukuo. Today part of China officially Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region or or Nei Mongol Autonomous Region (NMAR) in China. Today divided into twelve prefecture-level divisions. Borders Russia to the north and Mongolia. Wartime History Following the Manchurian incident of 1931, Japan conquered all of Manchuria including Inner Mongolia and developed the area's natural resources as part of the Japanese puppet state of Empire of Manchukuo Manchuko defended by the Japanese Kwantung Army. During the 1930's the poorly defined borders resulted in border with neighboring Mongolia and the Soviet Union. Between July 1938 to August 1938 was the Battle of Lake Khasan / Changkufeng Incident. The largest border incident was the May 1939 to August 1939 The Battle of Khalkhin Gol / Nomonhan Incident. On August 9, 1945, Soviet and Mongolian forces launched "Operation August Storm" against Manchuria. Postwar After the war, the USSR handed Inner Mongolia over to China in accordance with the Yalta Treaty. Communists Chinese armed with Japanese weapons and planes renewed their war against the Nationalist, before their equipment was updated with Russian equipment. Today Chinese Provinces in former Manchukuo include: Shanxi, Shaanxi, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and Gansu.
