Location Lat 6° 10' 28S Long 106° 49' 46E Jakarta is located at an elevation of 6' / 2m above sea level on the northern coast of western Java. Also known as Djogkarta, Jacarta, Djakarta or Jogkarta. Tanjung Priok is the western part of the city including the main harbor, Port of Tanjung Priok. Prewar and during the Pacific War known as Batavia in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today, Jakarta is the national capital of Indonesia located in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. Wartime History On March 1, 1942 the Japanese western landing force made an amphibious landing at Batavia and quickly occupied the area. Meanwhile, the Japanese eastern landing force landed 100 miles west of Soerabaja. These landings began the Japanese occupation of Java. After August 1943 a German U-Boat satellite station was established with the main base at Penang and was used to resupply submarines for patrols in the Indian Ocean. The Japanese occupied the city for the duration of the Pacific War until the official surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945. (Batavia) Java 6-107 Used to detain Allied Prisoners of War (POW) including the crew of USS Perch SS-176. Surviving prisoners were liberated at the end of the Pacific War.
