O. 22 Squadron (KIA, BR) Camberwell, VIC Gunner P/O Terance John Gawne, 408648 (KIA, BR) Melbourne, VIC Crashed January 30, 1944 Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as A-20C-5-DO Havoc serial number 42-33134. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia arriving in September 1943. Wartime History During October 1943 transfered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as Boston A28-27. Assigned to No. 22 Squadron. No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On January 30, 1944 took off piloted by W/C James Gibson Emerton on a mission against Lindenhafen. Over the target, hit by anti-aircraft fire over Cape Dampier and crashed. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Recovery of Remains Both crew were recovered postwar and transported to Port Moresby for permenant burial. Memorials Both crew were officially declared dead the day of the mission. After the recovery of remains, both were buried at Bita Paka War Cemetery. Emerton at D. B. 10. Gawne at D. B. 11.
