Location Girewo is located on the north coast of New Guinea. To the west is Sanananda (Sanananda Point) and to the east is Tarakeno and the month of Konombi Creek. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Northern District of the Territory of Papua. During the Pacific War, the Japanese referred to the entire beachhead area from this location to Giruwa to Basabua as "Basabua". The Allied wartime spelling was Giruwa. During 1951, the eruption of of Mount Lamington extended the coastline in this area and the present day village is located on a spit of land created from the eruption. Today located in Oro Bay Rural of Ijivitari District in Oro Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History In late July 1942, Giruwa was part of the Japanese beachhead area and used as a landing area by barges landing cargo and personnel. During late 1942, Giruwa was part of the Japanese Army defensive perimeter area. During late November 1942 and early December 1942 attacked by Allied bombers and fighters. In early December 1942 the Australian Army 21 Brigade blocked three large groups of Japanese reinforcements from Giruwa bound for Gona. Today Girewo village has a guest house and a war museum of relics collected from the Sanananda area. Sanananda War Museum (Girewo Village) Displayed in three huts divided into sections for the Australian, American and Japanese. The collection includes a wide variety of bullets, munitions, water bottles, mess tins and other assorted relics. In addition, supplies from a Japanese communication and hospital site at Sanananda.
