JPAC's Recovery of MIA
B-24 Wreck
I guess the big news in April is that JPAC [the
inheritor of the CILHI mantle] recovered human remains from B-24D
42-40475 "The Swan" [anyone got a photograph?].
I came across evidence of this plane wreck two years ago and
reported it to CILHI officials at that time. I subsequently
obtained photos of it and have been in correspondence with
some of the family. The General in Charge gave me a "Certificate
of Appreciation", for my work in locating this wreck [and
14 others with USAAF remains in recent years]. Sadly,
he had no time to receive my report on three new American wrecks
with remains as well, that I have located in recent weeks.
Working On New Wreck Locations
I obtained photos of an A20 behind
Madang [human remains] and
an Oscar as well in the same general location. I have other photos
that may be of P-38 'Marge", formerly flown by ace Richard
Bong [he wasn't flying it at the time]. I want to go to this
wreck myself shortly. The photos are poor quality, but I know
exactly where it is, and it appears to be a P-38 in the same
area where his plane crashed and was subsequently located a few
months later.
Discovery of Pre-War Fairchild Model
91 Amphibian
Finally, while I can't claim the credit,
I can report that recently in Port Moresby's Fairfax Harbour
a Fairchild model 91 amphibian aircraft was located. This plane
was lost in July 1936. It was being used by the Archbold Expedition
which was exploring New guinea at the time. |
