Aircraft History
Built by Grumman as model G-40. Constructors Number 4754. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as TBF-1 Avenger bureau number 24071.

Wartime History
Assigned to the USS Princeton CVL-23 to Composite Squadron 23 (VC-23). No known nickname, nose art or squadron number.

Mission History
On November 2, 1943 took off from USS Princeton piloted by Lt(jg) Charles C. Dyer on a strike against Buka Airfield and Bonis Airfield on Bougainville. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA).

Memorials
The entire crew was officially declared dead the day of the mission. All are memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing.

Dyer earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker at Dyer Cemetery in Webster Springs, WV.

Reinertson earned the Purple Heart, posthumously.

Nutt earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker at Beaver Union Cemetery in Beaver, OH.
