L2D "Cedar Tree" descending in flames over Bono Bay
This photograph was taken from B-24D "Juarez Whistle" 42-40496 that intercepted and shot down this transport.
Original caption: "On August 21, 1943 a formation of Liberators was on a mission to bomb the nickel mining installations for Pomelia in the Celebes. Out of the cumulus clouds popped an armed [sic airliner] Jap transport plane resembling a Douglas DC-3 with the roundel of the Japanese officials to Makassar.
Captain Augustus V. Connery (East Providence, R.I.) was flying in the wing position and his top turret gunner SSgt John W. Tackett (Los Angeles, Calif.) sent a stream of .50 calibre from engines along the windows and into the tail. When the skin of the tail burned off the transport nosed down and crashed into the sea, disappearing completely. The episode from start to finish consumed a matter of a few seconds."
