IJN 6th Sasebo SNLF Headquarters Australian Army September 9, 1945 Australian Army September 28, 1945 |
Tank History Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 95 Ha Go Light Tank manufacture number unknown. Wartime History One of two tanks assigned to 6th Sasebo Special Naval Landing Force (6th SNLF) to the headquarters tank unit. No known markings or numbers. The other tank was Type 95 Ha Go Light Tank (No. 1). Both tanks were transported to Buin (Kahili) on southern Bougainville. These tanks survived until the end of the Pacific War and were likely hidden or dispersed to avoid detection and attacks by Allied aircraft. Presumably, both were being saved for the final defense of the Buin (Kahili) area, but were never used in combat. In September 1945 after the surrender of Japan, both tanks were driven to Kahili Airfield (Buin) and parked in a weapons dump area to await the arrival of Allied forces. On September 9, 1945 both tanks were surrendered to the Australian Army. On September 28, 1945 both were rigged with explosives by the Australian Army when detonated their turrets were blown off and the interior burned. References AWM F07334 "Movement of Japanese to Fauro Island" tank demolition 00:30 - 01:04 Taki Takizawa adds: "Sasebo 6th SNLF had only two tanks. On the OOB, they were stated Type 97 Medium Tanks. But, it would be error and they were Type 95. Two tanks were assigned to SNLF HQ tank unit." Contribute
