  I-70 Japanese Submarine

Ship History
Built at Sasebo Navy Yard. Laid down January 25, 1933. Launched June 14, 1934, attended by Vice Admiral Yonai Mitsumasa, commandant of Sasebo Naval Base. On February 28, 1935 assigned to Chief Equipping Officer LtCdr Iwagami Hidetoshi. Completed November 9, 1935 and attached to Kure Naval District, assigned to SubDiv 12 as the new division flagship. Assigned to captain LtCdr Ohata Tadashi.

On August 24, 1939 undergoes a refit at Kure adding a Type 93 passive sonar and an improved attack computer were installed . Afterwards on October 30, 1940 assigned to Captain Cdr Sano Takao. On March 30, 1941 reappointed the flagship of SubDiv 12.

On May 12, 1941 I-69 accidentally collides with I-70 causing a long gash in her starboard tanks almost back to the conning tower. Both submarines return to Yokosuka and are repaired.

Wartime History
This was one of the submarines used to scout the Hawaii area in connection with the December 7, 1941 uprise attack against Pearl Harbor and Oahu.

On December 10, 1941, US Navy aircraft from USS Enterprise CV-6 sink I-70 north of Hawaii at roughly Lat 23°45′N, Long 155°35′W. This was the first Japanese combatant ship sunk by United States aircraft during World War II.
