  USS Erskine Phelps (YON-147)

Wartime History
On April 7, 1943 USS Erskine Phelps (YON-147) was refueling HMNZS Moa (T233) in Tulagi Harbor. During "Operation I-Go" attacked by Japanese D3A2 Val dive bombers. The Moa suffered a direct bomb hit that passed through the upper deck out the hull before exploding plus two near misses. During the same attack, Phelps sustained damage from bomb splinters. Afterwards, repaired and returned to service.

References
Phelps was listed as sunk in some reports, while Admiral Nimitz’ report describes her as "badly damaged".
