Ship History Built by the New York Naval Yard in Brooklyn, New York. Laid down June 27, 1940 as the lead warship of the Iowa-class Battleship. Launched August 27, 1942 as USS Iowa (BB-61) named for Iowa sponsored by Ilo Wallace, wife of Vice President Henry Wallace. Also in attendance was First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Commissioned February 22, 1943 into the U.S. Navy (USN) with Captain John L. McCrea in command. PARTIAL HISTORY Wartime History On May 1, 1944 USS Iowa led a shore bombardment of Ponape, covered by USS The Sullivans DD-537. PARTIAL HISTORY On August 29, 1945 U.S. Navy (USN) warships with minesweepers enter Tokyo Bay with USS Missouri (BB-63) anchors off Yokosuka. On October 27, 2011 left the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet in Suisun Bay and entered the Port of Richmond, California for painting and refurbishment to become a museum ship. On May 27, 2012 towed under the Golden Gate Bridge then onward to Los Angeles for display. Display On September 6,2011 awarded to the Pacific Battleship Center for display at the Port of Los Angeles at San Pedro in Los Angeles and permanently moored at Port of Los Angeles Berth 87. On July 4, 2012 opened to the public as USS Iowa Museum. The battleship Is also used as a set for movies and television productions and public events and civil ceremonies. Awards For her World War II service, Iowa earned 9 battle stars. For her Korean War service, Iowa earned 2 battle stars for a total of eleven battle stars. During her career, Iowa hosted three U.S. Presidents of the United States (POTUS) and earned the nickname "Battleship of Presidents" and "Big Stick".
