USN October 10, 1942
Ship History
Built by Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Company in Chester, Pennsylvania. Laid down December 1, 1941 under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 321) as a a Type T2-SE-A1 Suamico-class fleet oiler to be named SS Valley Forge. Launched June 25, 1942 as Tallulah sponsored by Mrs. H. Bowring. On July 30, 1942 acquired by the Navy. Commissioned in the U.S. Navy (USN) September 5, 1942 then fitted out in New York then to Norfolk for a shakedown cruise.

Wartime History
Painted in a camouflage pattern. During early October 1942 loaded with two 80' Elco Motor Torpedo Boats amidship as deck cargo: PT-111 to port and PT-112 to starboard. Both were covered with camouflage netting for the voyage.

On October 17, 1942 departs Norfolk with USS Chemung (AO-30) with destroyers USS Jenkins (DD-447) and USS Chevalier (DD-451) bound for New York. A week later, departs New York with a convoy of 32 ships escorted by destroyer HMS Havelock (H88) and four corvettes via Guantanamo Bay and Aruba. On November 9, 1942 transits the Panama Canal and remains at Balboa for three days. On November 12, 1942 departs across the Pacific via Bora Bora to Nouméa arriving December 12, 1942. A week later, departs for San Francisco arriving January 4, 1943.

PARTIAL HISTORY

Fate
During May 1975 placed out of service and assigned to the Maritime Administration (MARAD) and anchored in James River, Virginia. Stricken from the Navy registry on March 31, 1986. Sold for scrap February 2, 1987 and broken up for scrap.

Awards
For her World War II service, earned seven battle stars. For her Korean War service, earned one battle star.
