Ship History Built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding & Engineering Company at Nagasaki in Japan. Laid down December 21, 1896 with yard number 99 / IMO off no. 2331. Launched April 16, 1898. Commissioned August 16, 1898 as Hitachi Maru. Purchased by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) in Tokyo for use as a passenger and cargo vessel. Sinking History On June 15, 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War sunk during the "Hitachi Maru Incident" 常陸丸事件 when three Japanese transports were sunk during a commerce raiding sorted by an Imperial Russian Navy armored cruiser squadron. References Note, two other ships were named "Hitachi Maru": Hitachi Maru (6,172 Tons) scuttled November 7, 1917 by SMS Wolf (Wolf IV) during World War I.
