Ship History
Built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding & Engineering Company at Nagasaki in Japan. Laid down December 21, 1896 with yard number 99 / IMO off no. 2331. Launched April 16, 1898. Commissioned August 16, 1898 as Hitachi Maru. Purchased by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) in Tokyo for use as a passenger and cargo vessel.

Sinking History
On June 15, 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War sunk during the "Hitachi Maru Incident" 常陸丸事件 when three Japanese transports were sunk during a commerce raiding sorted by an Imperial Russian Navy armored cruiser squadron.

References
Note, two other ships were named "Hitachi Maru": Hitachi Maru (6,172 Tons) scuttled November 7, 1917 by SMS Wolf (Wolf IV) during World War I. Also, Hitati Maru (often misspelled Hitachi Maru) damaged and run arground February 14, 1943 on southern Bougainville.
