49th Fighter Group

This book is a pictorial history of one of the most famous fighter groups in the South West Pacific, the 49th Fighter Group. Its ranks included Richard I. Bong (9th & 7th FS and scored 21 of his 40 victories while assigned to the group), Robert DeHaven (14) and Gerald Johnson (24), Ernest Harris (10) and over thirty other aces and a dozen other aces who flew tours with the 49th.

Illustrated with photographs of the pilots, their aircraft and colorful nose art, this book tells the story of the group's most famous pilots in one page profiles, and nose art gallery. A color center section shows 49th FG nose art schemes.

The 49th's history spans all of the war, from its inception during the expansion of the Army in 1940, and its early history prior to deployment overseas. In combat, it was one of the earliest units to join the battle, and fought until the end of the war. Its planes and pilots participated in the defense of Australia at Horn Island and Darwin. Then, north to New Guinea, Philippines and Okinawa.
