Samoa is the western half of the Samoa Islands and includes the main islands of Savaii, Upolu and borders American Samoa to the east, the International Date Line is located to the west. Wartime History
On May 8, 1942 the 3rd Marine Brigade convoy arrived off Apia and General Barrett assumed military command of Western Samoa.

Savaii Island (Savai'i)
Savaiʻi is the largest and highest island in the Samoa Islands chain. It is also the biggest landmass. During the war, a small US Marine detachment was established on Savaii in late March 1942 to garrison the island.

Upolu Island
Forty miles long by 13 wide. Mandated to New Zealand, is 36 miles west north-west of Tutuila. On March 28, 1942 the US Marines 7th Defense Battalion arrived to garrison the island.

Located on the northern coast of Upolu. Today, capital of Samoa.

Faleolo Airfield
Completed July 1942 still in use today
