Location
Kasatka Bay is located at the center of the eastern coast of Iturup Island. Known by the Japanese as Hitokappu Bay (Hitokappu Wan) 単冠湾. Prewar until September 1945 part of Japan. During September 1945 uccupied by Soviet forces and the Japanese residence were expelled and became part of the Soviet Union (Russia). Today part of the Sakhalin Oblast in Russia. Since 1945, known as Kasatka Bay. In Russian Залив Касатка or Zaliv Kasatka.

Wartime History
On November 26, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) strike force of 24 warships including six aircraft carriers departed Hitokappu Bay across the Pacific Ocean for Operation Z the surprise attack against Pearl Harbor and Oahu.
