Lat 50°23′N Long 116°31′E Located on the Borzya River, 349km southeast of Chita.

The modern town began with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1899. The settlement around the Borzya railway station was officially founded in 1900.

During the Battle of Khalkin Gol / Nomonhan Incident during May-Septmeber 1939, this was the near railway station on the Trans-Siberian Railway and a logistical base for the battle 700km distant.

Granted town status in 1950. Headquarters of Russian 36th Army.
