The Sepik River is one of New Guinea's largest rivers with the mouth located on the north coast of New Guinea. Offshore is Blup Blup Island. Further to the west is Wewak and further to the southeast is Hansa Bay. Wartime villages along the Sepik River include: Angoram (Angorum), Marienburg (Marienberg), Moim, Timbunke and Murik Lakes. Today located in the Angoram District of East
Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
1944, retreating and starving Japanese troops crossed
the Sepik River and the massive swamp area surrounding on their way from points
along the north coast walking westward towards Wewak.
