    Oro Province (Northern Province)  Papua New Guinea (PNG)
Location
Oro Province is located on the northern coast of the Papuan peninsula of New Guinea. The provincial capital is Popondetta. Prewar and during the Pacific War known as the Northern District of the Territory of Papua. Postwar known as Northern Province. Today known as Oro Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Oro Province is divided into two districts: Sohe District in the northwest and Ijivitari District in the southeast. Papua New Guinea (PNG). Borders Central Province to the south and west, Milne Bay Province to the southeast and Morobe Province to the northwest.

Wartime History
On July 21, 1942 Japanese forces landed at Gona and began their drive inland then via the Kokoda Trail over the Owen Stanley Range in their unsuccessful overland attempt to reach Port Moresby. During late September 1942, Australian troops began to advance, driving the Japanese back to the beachhead coastal area where they defended their beachhead areas of Buna, Gona and Sanananda. After the battle, the coastal area was developed into a major Allied base with dozens of airfields and a staging base for operations elsewhere in New Guinea.

Sohe District

Tamata Rural  located at the north center of Oro Province includes Ioma.

Ijivitari District
Popendetta Urban  includes the Popondetta area.
Oro Bay Rural  includes Oro Bay and the north coast area to Cape Ward Hunt
Cape Nelson Rural  includes Cape Nelson and Tufi.
Afore Rural  located in the southern portion of Oro Province

Buna-Gona-Sanananda Beachhead Area
Buna  located on the north coast of New Guinea fortified beachhead battlefield and Buna Airfield.
Buna Government Station  prewar Buna Government Station.
Buna Village (Old Village)  located a mile to the west of Buna Government Station.
Holnicote Bay  located on the north coast of New Guinea bordering Gona.
Gona  located on the north coast of New Guinea, Gona battlefield liberated by the Australian Army.
Basabua  located on the north coast of New Guinea to the east of Gona.
Sanananda (Sanananda Point)  beachhead battlefield that concluded fighting in the area.
Girewo (Giruwa)  located to the east of Sanananda and Sanananda Point
Huggins Road Block  located between Soputa and Sanananda near the junction of the Soputa Track.
The Triangle (Bloody Triangle)  located near Buna, nicknamed by the US Army 32nd Infantry Division.
Strip Point  located between Giropa Point and Cape Endaiadere.
Jiropa (Giropa)  prewar coconut palm plantation.
Simemi  located near Buna with Simemi Creek Bridge.
Cape Endaiadere  located to the west of Buna includes "Maggot Beach".
Hariko  located on the north coast between Cape Endaiadere and Cape Sudest.
Cape Sudest  located on the north coast south of Hariko.
Cape Killerton  beachhead battlefield first liberated by Australians.
Haddy's Village  located to the west of Gona.

Dobodura Area
Dobodura  inland village developed by the U.S. Army into a major airfield complex.
Horanda  inland village southwest of Dobodura.
Girua (Girua Blocks)  inland village near Girua Airport (Kenney Strip, Dobodura No. 7)
Ulada  inland village between Horanda and Borio.
Borio (Boru)  inland village east of Horanda and northeast of Embi Lakes.
Embi Lakes  four separate freshwater lakes including Big Embi, Little Embi Lakes and East Embi.
Embi  inland village near Dobodura Airfield complex.
Higaturu  inland village today Higaturu oil palm.
Popondetta  inland village today provincial capital of Oro Province and Popondetta Airfield.
Uhita  inland village west of Popondetta and Girua Airfield (Dobodura No. 7).
Soputa (Saputa)  inland village at the crossroads Kokoda-Sananada and Buna-Kokoda Road.
Mount Lamington (Mt. Lamington)  stratovolcano located to the southwest of Popondetta.

Oro Bay  located on the north coast of New Guinea includes Oro Bay Airfield.
Embogo  located on the north coast to the north of Oro Bay.
Harvey Bay  located on the north coast of New Guinea to the southeast of Oro Bay.

Kokoda Area
Kokoda (Kokoda Station)  located at the northern end of the Kokoda Trail includes Kokoda Airfield.
Kokoda Highway (Kokoda-Buna Road)  road the spans from Kokoda to Buna.
Yodda  located to the north of Kokoda.
Saga  located to the northwest of Kokoda.

Owen Stanley Range Oro Province Locations
Owen Stanley Range (Owen Stanley Mountains)  mountain range in the southeastern portion of New Guinea.
English Peaks  located in the Owen Stanley Range.
Mount Suckling (Goropi)  highest peak in the Goropu Mountains of the Owen Stanley Range.

Isivita Mission   prewar Anglican mission established by Reverend Henry Holland.
Sangara (Sangara Blocks)  prewar Anglican mission between Popondetta and Kokoda.
