Oro Province (Northern Province) ¬†Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Oro Province is located on the northern coast of the Papuan peninsula on New Guinea. Borders Central Province to the south and west, Milne Bay Province to the southeast and Morobe Province to the northwest. Previously, known as "Northern Province" or prewar as the "Northern District".

Wartime History
On July 21, 1942 Japanese forces landed at Gona and began their drive inland over the Kokoda Trail in the Owen Stanley Range in their unsuccessful overland attempt to reach Port Moresby. During late September 1942, Australian troops began to advance, driving the Japanese back to the beachhead coastal area where they defended bitterly at Buna, Gona and Sanananda. After the battle, the coastal area was developed into a major Allied base with dozens of airfields and a staging base for operations elsewhere in New Guinea.
