2° 30' 0S Long 150° 15' 0E New Hanover is located off the western
tip of New Ireland and Kavieng. Offshore is Selapiu Island.
During July 1941, following their landing at Kavieng, Japanese Navy Mai No 2 Special
Naval Landing Force (SNLF) landed at New Hanover and occupied the island without opposition. Occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the war until September 1945.
