Guimaras Island is located in Guimaras Province in the Western Visayas in the Philippines. Borders Panay Island and the Guimaras Strait.
Occupied by the Japanese during 1942. In 1945, the US Army landed on Guimaras and liberated the island.
Prewar, 2nd Lt. Douglas MacArthur, at age 23 as a fresh graduate of West Point, was assigneed to Iloilo as the head of a company of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They constructed roads and the Sto. Rosario Wharf, presently named MacArthur's Wharf and is still in use today.
Capital of the province on the northwest coast, across the Iloilo Strait from Iloilo.
