Wartime History
Wotje Island was occupied by the Japanese and developed into a military base supporting Wotje Airfield that spanned most of the island. Attacked by American aircraft starting in February 1942 until late 1944. The surviving garrison was cut off from resupply but continued to occupy the island until the official surrender of Japan.
