Location The Maldives is located in the Laccadive Sea in the Indian Ocean. Located 250 miles southwest of India and 430 miles southwest of Sri Lanka (Ceylon). The Maldive Islands includes twenty-six atolls, oriented north-south, that lie between Minicoy Island (the southernmost part of Lakshadweep, India) and the Chagos Archipelago. Prewar and during the Pacific War, the Maldives was a British protectorate. On July 26, 1965 became independent as the Republic of the Maldives. Kelaa Atoll (Kelai, Haa Alif Atoll) Northern atoll in the Maldives, geographically part of Thiladhummathi Atoll Addu Atoll (Seenu) Southern atoll in the Maldives, includes the islands of Hulhudhoo, Maradhoo, Meedhooo, Feydhoo, Gan, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Hithadhoo and many smaller islands ringing a deep lagoon.
