Imperial Iron and Steel
Works (Yawata Steel Works)
The Yawata Steel Works 八幡製鐵所 Yahata seitetsu-sho was established in 1896 as the Imperial Iron and Steel
Works. During World War II, Yawata Steel Works produced roughly 24% of the rolled steel produced in Japan. In 1944, the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) identified Yawata Steel Works as an important target for strategic bombing by B-29 Superfortresses and was first targeted on June 15, 1944 until the end of the Pacific War.
