Location Iriomote Jima is located in the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Island Group) in the Sakishima Islands of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Also known as Iriomote Island, Iriomote Shima, Iriomote-jima, Irïmutii or Iriumuti. Iriomote Jima is the largest island in the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Island Group) and the second largest in Okinawa Prefecture. Surrounded by the East China Sea. Borders Kohama Island (Kohama Jima) and Ishigaki Island (Ishigaki Jima) to the east. Wartime History During World War II, many residents of Ishigaki Island were forcibly made to take refuge on Iriomote. Sonai 祖納 Located on the western coast of Iriomote Jima. Also known as Sonai Town, Sōnō or Sono. Marumabonsan Island (Marumabonsan Rock) Small island to the south of Sonai. Funauki 船浮 Located on the western coast of Iriomote Jima. Also known as Funauke, Funaki, Hunauke. Postwar At the end of the Pacific War, American forces occupied Iriomote Island. On June 17, 1972 Iriomote and all of Okinawa Prefecture was returned to Japan. Objectives included a barge southeast of Sonai town, building in the town itself, a 75 to 100 foot lugger in Funauke Ko and a larger ship, possibly a Sugar Baker in Funauke Kita Wan, and building in Funsuke town.
