Iriomote Island is located in the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Island Group) in the Sakishima Islands in the Yaeyama Subprefecture of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Also known as Iriomote Island, Iriomote-jima, Irïmutii or Iriumuti. Largest island in the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Island Group) and the second largest in Okinawa Prefecture. Surrounded by the East China Sea. Borders Kohama Island (Kohama Jima) and Ishigaki Island (Ishigaki Jima) to the east.
During World War II, many residents of Ishigaki Island were forcibly made to take refuge on Iriomote.
Lat 24° 23' 24N Long 123° 44' 47E Sonai is located on the northern coast of
Iriomote Jima. Also known as Sonai Town, Sōnō or Sono.
At the end of the Pacific War, American forces occupied the island. On June 17, 1972 Iriomote and all of Okinawa Prefecture were returned to Japan.
