    Iriomote Jima 西表島 Okinawa Prefecture Japan

Iriomote Island is located in the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Island Group) in the Sakishima Islands of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Also known as Iriomote Island, Iriomote-jima, Irïmutii or Iriumuti. Largest island in the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Island Group) and the second largest in Okinawa Prefecture. Surrounded by the East China Sea. Borders Kohama Island (Kohama Jima) and Ishigaki Island (Ishigaki Jima) to the east.

Wartime History
During World War II, many residents of Ishigaki Island were forcibly made to take refuge on Iriomote.

Sonai 祖納
Located on the western coast of Iriomote Jima. Also known as Sonai Town, Sōnō or Sono.

Funauki 船浮
Located on the western coast of Iriomote Jima. Also known as Funauke, Funaki, Hunauke.

At the end of the Pacific War, American forces occupied Iriomote Island. On June 17, 1972 Iriomote and all of Okinawa Prefecture was returned to Japan.
