Tanahmerah Bay is located on the north coast of New Guinea with Cape Tanahmerah to the north. To the east are the Cyclops Mountains and Hollandia (Jayapura). To the south is Depapre Bay and Depapre. A prewar track connected Tanahmerah Bay to Hollandia. Also known as Tanah Merah Bay or Teluk Tanahmerah (red soil bay) in Indonesian.

Wartime History
On April 22, 1944 during Operation Reckless, a naval bombardment proceeded the amphibious landing of the U. S. Army 24th Division, 19th Infantry Regiments and 21st Infantry Regiments on the beaches of Tanahmerah Bay code named "Red Beach 1" at Depapre and "Red Beach 2" further to the north. Aferwards, the track was expanded into a road by the U. S. Army.

Several tanks hulks are to the east of Depapre at the base of the track.
