Wartime History
Japanese occupied for the duration of WWII. and used as a rest center. This area was bombed on several occasions when USAAF bombers aborted from missions against Mindanao.

On January 13, 1945, three P-40s from RAAF 80 Squadron ditched near Talaud Island when they flew past Morotai (where they were supposed to ferry the aircraft to). They ditched due to a lack of fuel, were captured and exectuted about 10 days later. Several Japanese were tried and executed for this incident after the war. Thanks to Daniel Leahy for this information.
