Also known as Harakoe Island. Offshore is Pelauw Island.

Haroekoe (Harakoe, Haruku)
Lat 3° 36' 12S Long 128° 25' 8E  Haroekoe village is located on Haroekoe Island. Also known as Haruku, Harakoe, Samet Haroekoe or Kampoeng Haroekoe. Nearby is Haroekoe Airfield (Harakoe, Pelauw) on Pelauw Island.

December 7, 1943 - December 30, 1944

Haroekoe POW Camp
Labor camp of mostly British, Australian captured in Malay, and Dutch from Ceram, they were used to build airfields, including Liang Airfield (Ambon East). After surrender, the Japanese executed 400 Australian POWs to prevent their crimes from being known.

Veteran Cyril Morris Royal Air Force (RAF) prisoner at Haroekoe POW Camp recalled:
"Dawn to dusk hard labor building an airstrip [Haroekoe Airfield (Harakoe, Pelauw)]. The brutality, disease and malnutrition resulting in a death rate of ten burials a day."
