Lat 1° 0' 0N Long 128° 0' 0E Halmahera Island is the largest island in the Molucca Island Group (Molucca Islands). To the north is Moratai Island. Offshore islands include Miti Island, Ternate Island and Wai Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in North Maluku Province (Provinsi Maluku Utara) in Indonesia
During the Pacific War, occupied by the Japanese and heavily fortified with 20,000 Japanese troops stationed on the island. Bypassed by Allied forces, the Japanese were left to starve, cut off from supply and their headquarters until the end of the war.
