Kauai is the fourth largest of the main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. Also known as "Garden Isle", located 105 miles across the Kauaʻi Channel to the northwest of Oahu.

Nawiliwili Harbor
On December 30, 1942 Japanese submarine I-3 surfaced and fired twenty 5.5" HE shells at the breakwater and a nearby building identified as a warehouse. Most projectiles fell short of the target. Only one house was damaged by shell fragments. One shell perforated a large gasoline storage tank, but failed to explode. The total damage caused was estimated at $500.
