Location
Shanghai 上海市 is located in Shanghai Municipality on the eastern coast of China at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Also known as Shanghai City. Borders Shanghai Harbor and beyond the East China Sea.

Wartime History
On January 28, 1932, Japanese forces attacked and the Chinese resisted, fighting them to a standstill until a cease fire in May. During the Battle of Shanghai in 1937, the Japanese occupied the remaining Chinese administered parts of the city. Foreigners continued to live undisturbed in the "International Settlement" and "French Concession".

On December 8, 1941 at the start of the Pacific War, Japanese forces occupied both areas and imprisoned foreigner civilians and seized their property. During World War II, Shanghai was occupied by the Japanese. Starting in early July 1944 attacked by U.S. bombers until August 1945. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945.

Postwar
On May 27, 1949, at the conclusion of the Shanghai Campaign the Communist People's Liberation Army (PLA) occupied Shanghai through the Shanghai Campaign.

Postwar
On May 27, 1949, the Communist People's Liberation Army took control of Shanghai, which was one of only three former Republic of China municipalities not merged into neighboring provinces over the next decade After 1949, most foreign firms moved their offices from Shanghai to Hong Kong, as part of an exodus of foreign investment due to the Communist victory.

Today
Shanghai is the most populous city in China.
