City located in northern China, surrounded by the Hebei Province and bordering Tianjin Municipality to the southeast. Wartime Allied spelling "Peking".
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the city was captured by the Japanese Army on July 29, 1937. The city became the seat of the Provisional Government of the Republic of China, a puppet state that ruled the Japanese-occupied northern China. This government was later merged into the larger Wang Jingwei government in Nanking (Nanjing).
