Location Wartime History During the night of March 4-5, 1944, about 50 miles northeast of Indaw USAAF Air Commando gliders and aircraft commanded by Colonel Philip G Cochran drop US Army engineers followed British Army long-range penetration troops commanded by Major General Orde C. Wingate into the area to cut Japanese lines of communication in central Burma. The landing zones were named White City, Blackpool and Broadway.
