The Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) is located in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Formally known as Bougainville Province or North Solomons Province. The province encompasses Bougainville Island plus the surrounding islands and atolls. Prewar and during the Pacific War, Bougainville was considered part of the "North Solomons" or "Northern Solomons". To the south is the international border with the Solomon Islands and Western Province.
During the prewar period and Pacific War, Bougainville was considered part of the "North Solomons" or "Northern Solomons" or "Bougainville Province". Prewar, coastal areas of Bougainville were developed into copra plantations planted with coconut palms. The Catholic church established missions at several locations.
