During World War II, there was an emergency strip and an Australian Army base at this location.

Wallgrove Army Base
The following Australian Army units were based there:
c 1940 - 21st Light Horse Regiment
Jul 1940 - 2/19th Battalion (new recruits)
Dec 1940 - 3rd Infantry Battalion
Feb 1943 - 9th Australian Division (AIF division returned from North Africa).
Aug 1943 - 53rd Anti-Aircraft (Composite) Regiment
Apr 1944 - 2/25th Australian Infantry Battalion
Apr 1944 - 2/31st Australian Infantry Battalion
176 Air Dispatch Company postwar based at this location
