Wartime History
During the night of June 6, 1942 to June 7, 1942 the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) 301st Independent Infantry Battalion landed at Chichagof Harbor. On May 11, 1943 the U.S. Army landed at three locations on Attu Island. After 17 days of combat, the remaining Japanese were compressed into a small portion of Chichagof Harbor. On May 29, 1943 at dawn, the remaining Japanese led by Col. Colonel Yasuyo Yamasaki launch a final banzai charge against the U.S. line and were defeated. On May 30, 1943 the three American forces converge on Chichagof Harbor and the U.S. Army declared the island secured.
