Of the 28 submarines built here at the Manitwoc Shipbuilding Co. twenty one earned the Asiatic-Pacific Service Metal with a combined total of 86 battle stars. Four of these submarines were lost along with 336 crewmen. Their locations are still unknown.
Coincidentally, we lived of Rasher St. named after the USS Rasher SS 269 which went on to rank second among US Sub's for total tonnage sunk during WWII. Another interesting note is that I was able to dive on the Japanese oiler, Shinkoku Maru, which was torpedoed by the USS Peto SS 265, the first submarine built here in 1941. We also have the Burger Boat Company here in Manitowoc which specializes in building luxury yacht's. (Still building them at present) The Navy had contracted their company to build landing craft and wooden bottom minesweepers. They also went on to serve in the Pacific. |
