B-29 Navigator & Prisoner of War

Navigator aboard B-29 "Rover Boys Express" 42-24769 shot down over Tokyo on January 27, 1945 on a high altitude bombing mission.

POW in Kempei Tai - Tokyo - Ueno Zoo cage and then Omori POW. Was in barracks (after solitary at KT) with Greg Boyington - at Omori - friends after the war - traveled together - golfed together - wrote and delivered his Eulogy on Jan 15, 1988 at Arlington National.

Friends with Saburo Sakai for 16 years prior to his death, continue as mentor to his daughter Michiko. Played golf with Saburo in Japan and at my club here - was guest speaker in 2001 when his memorabilia presented by his family to Nimitz Museum in Fredricksburg, Tex.

Friends with Henry Sakaida for 15 plus years.

Lecture and visit in all major Japanese cities since 1984 - including at dedication of new Museum (March 10, 1945 fire raid) March of 2002.

Have done several shows with Paul Tibbets and Dutch VanKirk, Nav. on EG is friend and we do stuff together and Ferebee before he died in 2000.

Also friends with Chase Nielsen, Nav on crew 6 with Doolittle. He occupied same cage in KT Tokyo in part of 1942 - I later in same cage and his note scratched in floor and hole in wall - did stuff with George Gay prior to his death - Japanese authors now doing B-29 and Japanese fighters in both Japanese and English - selling well - Key author is Koji Takaki friend ex Osaka area.

Am active in Commemorative Air Force - was inducted into the American Combat Airman Hall of Fame in Oct. 2001 along with Ex Pres Bush and 5 or 6 others. Also active in the B-29 DOC restoration at Wichita - owned by friend of mine from Cleveland, Ohio Tony Mazzolini - Also working with the folks at Pratt, Kansas to create Museum for B 29s in original B 29 hanger there from WW II days.

Do regular E Mail exchanges with half dozen excellent Historians and plain friends in Japan and have been with them on last three trips in 2000-2001 and 2002. Have been invited back to Saipan (6 earlier trips done) for May 2004 60th commemorative.
