Relatives
Peter Mackie (grandson
Robert Fraser)
"He served on the Electra and saw action most notably rescuing
survivors from the Prince of Wales and Repulse, i have recently
read a letter he sent to his sister three weeks before his death
on the electra, quite emotional. He writes about his quarters being
in the fore-end of the ship (i assume this to be in the front)
and that the waves crashing into it are like people hammering at
it, very difficult to sleep as they are crammed in down there.
My grandfather was on board
the Electra when it went down. He is reported as
killed in action and we can only assume that he was, how
i am not so sure as some of the crew were taken POW. Which
leaves the thought that he is still there, hard to comprehend,
as without him, so many of my family tree would not exist,
strange furthermore that his son, my father, was still not
yet born when the ship went down. He has 2 sisters that are
still alive, they remember him like it was yesterday, it is
such a terrible shame that there has never been what you would
call 'closure'."
