1. Message from the site's author - WWII 60th Anniversary
--------------------------------------------------------
Sixty Years ago, WWII was a month old in Europe. The Pacific
was about to boil over, and Japan was already engaged in China. As
we enter into the 60th anniversary of WWII, it is time to pause and reflect
on the war that was probably the single most important event of the 20th
century.
Look for the new "60th Anniversary Logo" and webpage for information that related to this important anniversary. You can visit the page at http://www.wanpela.com/wrecks/60th/
This anniversary is all the more important as it may be the last
that many veterans live to see. I urge everyone to seek out the veterans
in your community and listen / record their stories.
Please remember the "Veteran's Speak" section of this website, and
contribute stories, photographs and memories to this growing archive of
Pacific Related histories.

2. War History - African American Servicemen in the Pacific
--------------------------------------------------------
http://www.mhv.net/~wanpela/wrecks/histories/blackGI.html/
Many African Americans served important roles overseas in all
theaters. Although the Armed Forces were segregated during WWII,
they played important roles none the less. This page details some
of the African American Units that served in New Guinea. The presence
of these soldiers had a tremendous influence on native Melanesians, and
accelerated the final defeat of the Japanese.

other on a mountain ridge. Both have video clips provided.by Jeff

4. Book Reviews - No Surrender: My Thirty Year War
--------------------------------------------------------
http://www.mhv.net/~wanpela/wrecks/news/reviews.html
The long awaited reprint of this "classic" of WWII lore and mystique is now easily available with a new re-print from the Naval Institute Press.
It is hard to believe the incredible, and true stories of Japanese
holdouts in the Pacific long after the "official" end of the war in 1945.
Their stories are a cross between "Robinson Caruso" survival, bushido ideology,
and urban legend. More importantly, it is the story of human that overcame
an incredible mental and physical ordeal for a cause he believed in.

5. Link of the week - Australian War Memorial
--------------------------------------------------------
Australian War Memorial
http://www.awm.gov.au/
This is the website of Australia's War Memorial and archives.
Their site has several incredible online resources for historians and enthusiasts
to access from any where around the world. Of particular interest
is the searchable photo archives. Queries return a list of photographs,
their descriptions and a full sized image. (The images are watermarked
with the AWM logo). As a research tool, it is a truly incredible
site that provides access to thousands of records and photos that would
not be otherwise available.
