If you are refering to the Greenland group...it was 6 ? X P38s and 2 X B17s that forced landed there. Finally located by ice penetrating radar, a steam gizmo 'the gopher' was deigned and built to melt a shaft down... some 270 ft !. Then a cavity was steamed out before dismantling the aircraft. There is a very good book, the title escapes me, about the recovery of one P38, now flying as "Glacier Girl". A B17? and another P38 were looked at, if my memory serves, but both squashed flat/ sheared by the ice.

Has to be the most amazing recovery event ever, in one of the most hostile places on eath.!
