Beaufort Bomber A9-141

Post by West-Front »

Open Day, Sunday 2nd of August 2009!

The restoration of Australian World War II Beaufort Bomber A9-141 will be a highlight at the public Open Day at Caboolture Airfield this Sunday the 2nd August, 2009. Former Beaufort engineers, pilots, gunners, wireless operators and project volunteers will swing open the hangar doors of the Beaufort’s home from 10.30am on Sunday to reveal the progress of the restoration.

Project Coordinator Ralph Cusack says he is confident that Beaufort A9-141 will take to the air in 2011.

“We’re on target and this Open Day at Caboolture will give visitors an opportunity to witness close up the exacting and meticulous work that is being undertaken to restore Beaufort A9-141 to its original flying condition.” Ralph said. The public Open Day is organised by The Beaufort Restoration Group in conjunction with the Caboolture Warplane Museum together with the Caboolture Aero Club. Ralph Cusack says the Beaufort project will be one of many attractions at the Airfield on the day, and this Open Day is expected to be even better than previous years’ events.

“There will be lots to see including numerous aircraft close-up, fly bys and the air museums. Beaufort A9-141 and other aircraft undergoing restoration will be on display with volunteers on hand able to explain the construction details of this historically important aircraft. “Whilst this aircraft is mainly reconstructed from the remains of the crashed Beaufort A9-141, many other components have been retrieved from all over Australia and the jungles of New Guinea, either to be refurbished and used in the restoration or as patterns for re-engineered parts.”

This historically important Australian built aircraft will, when complete, be the only flying example of this aircraft anywhere in the world. As an aircraft that played an important role in the defence of Australia in the Second World War, it has both Australian and International significance.

Don't know how I missed this, W-F. Great looking work on the Beaufort. I spent a few days back in 2001 doing some sandblasting and rivet drilling when they were still in the workshop in Brisbane. She was awe-inspiring then and looks even better now.
