Harvard T-6 or SNJ
Posted: Tue Jan 01, 2008 3:46 am
I am restoring a Harvard. It is going well, and the plane should be airworthy by next year. Anyway, wondering if anyone has heard of any Harvard T-6 or SNJ's having served w/ frontline units in the South Pacific Area?
There were Harvard II's w/ the RAF in Burma. It would be interesting to know.

I can't recall hearing about Harvards/Texans/Mosquitos operating with frontline units in the South (West) Pacific Area, though could be wrong.
The RNZAF operated Harvards, though these all appear to have been used as New Zealand based trainers.
The first time I can think of Harvards going on the offensive would have been during the Korean War.

Right, I thought I read something of an SNJ colliding with an F4F in Polynesia? Sort of near the frontlines.

Chris the USMC Squadron had SNJ as Hack with them at Guadcanal and most of there operational forward base's. The US Navy always when they were assigned shore base had at least one with them ask Jack Cook to dig up one of his photos.
I do know the VF-17 had one because I've seen photos of Ira flying it and it end up come to NAS Brunswick when the Squadron was sent there at the end of 45 along with the Corsairs.
Have you tried contacting NHC aircraft division for info. if not since I'm their every week I could pop in and ask Brian or Mary to do a quick check.

I know of a Stearman type aircraft crashing into a river Burma (?) with the loss of two USAAF airmen. I'll provide a date and reference when I come across it in my notes. TonyM.

On 23 October 1944, an USAAF Stearman PT-17 crashed into a river in a remote part of Burma. Pilot was killed and passenger was missing. This is Accident # 528 on the US Army Air Forces Accident Report Microfilm for that date. TonyM.

I'm assuming this is PT-17 42-16499 (MACR 9453). Does anyone have crew details for this loss?
