Balikpapan landing July 1945

Post by dodgecharger » Sat Feb 01, 2014 9:54 pm

I 'd like to find information from veterans (or from decendants) that landed at Balikpapan on the LST 938(USS Maricopa) on 1 July 1944. I've recently been looking into my Dad's war records & obtained a copy from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. It shows him embarking on LST 938 at Moratai on 20 June 1945. I couldn't find reference to this LST in the recent Operation Borneo book but Wikipedia info shows it as part of the 1 July landing. My Dad was in the 1st Australian Tank Battalion which was supported by US naval & air bombarments. The LST 938 is also depicted on Wikipedia with a photo(now the Tran Khan Du) as recent as April 2003 operating as part of the Vietnamese navy.
