Hello, I am a new member and I am looking for some help. My wife's uncle was the Navigator on this plane that crashed near UHTIA village to the west of Popondetta on October 5,1942.
The entire crew was declared dead on December 12, 1945.
His name was Philip E. Germain , serial number 0-437349 and was from Wallingford,CT.
We are trying to find out if he would have qualified for the Purple Heart Medal and if so was one granted to him or other members of his crew.
Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

Mr. Stickle,
Thank you for sharing your story about Lt. Philip Germain of the 38th Bomb Group.
According to the page for Lt. Germain at the website of the American Battle Monuments Commission he was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal as were the rest of the crew of the B-25. I include a copy of the ABMC page below. It should be a simple matter to order replacement medals if your family no longer has them or never received them in the first place.

Here is a link to the page on the crew of "Battlin' Biffy" at Pacific Wrecks.

If you have a photo of Lt. Germain that you would like for us to add to the Pacific Wrecks page please let us know.
There are several people who frequent this website who know a great deal about the operations of the 38th Bomb Group in WWII should you have any other questions.
The 38th Bomb Group Association has a nice website where you can download the official unit history.

Good luck,
